Description:
230 Ritch Street was designed by the firm of Santos Prescott & Associates, under the direction of Bay Area Architect and Dean of the MIT School of Architecture Adèle Naudé Santos. Everywhere you look, you’ll see an architect’s eye for detail: a highly refined sense of space, proportion, and geometry crafted with a meticulous attention to detail.
At the center of this 4-bedroom/3-bath home, a double-height living space—the conceptual and physical heart of the house— looks out onto a tropical courtyard of palm trees that rise three stories high. On the second level, a mezzanine overlooks the living area below and provides an elegant and practical transition between the more public living spaces and the more private bedrooms and work area.
On the third level is the master bedroom suite—a vast space with a 22-foot-high ceiling akin to the main living area. With its open plan, the suite is organized into more informal areas devoted to sleeping, dressing, bathing, and lounging defined by custom cabinetry and three-quarter-height walls that float within the larger space. Sunlight and air flow from the adjoining private roof deck and bring the outside gently in.

Architect’s Statement:
This dramatic designer home began its life in the 1930′s as a warehouse near San Francisco Bay. The design goal was to retain the generous sense of space and utilize original elements, such as the large timber beams. By adding luxurious materials and finishes—for example, brushed aluminum and polished granite—throughout the space, this home truly becomes a modern interpretation of the original.
